Bethany, the toll booth attendant, had been practicing her “Have a nice day” line since she got the job. Looking in the mirror in her bathroom, she say it what she considered her normal voice. Then, she’d try it with a southern draw. Then, she’d attempt a British accent because she is very into The Crown on Netflix. She likes the Queen. She even bought eyeglasses that look like her’s, even though Bethany is only 27 and the Queen is an old woman. She pulls her hair into a ponytail, puts on her Queen glasses and pretends.
Bethany: $5 a car adds up and we only take cash.
Kit: what happens to all the money?
Bethany: stacked into piles of $100. Rubberbanded together. We drop it in the safe when we go home.
Kit: whoever takes it to the bank must be a sitting duck.
Bethany: they have a gun.
The British accent didn’t seem to faze anyone. Maybe it wasn’t that convincing. Her glasses, though, did confuse people. Glasses for an 80-year-old. She didn’t care. Today she wore a light blue hoodie under her electric yellow safety vest.
Later, when she gets off and drops the pile of cash into the safe, she might stop at Walmart and pick up a some mac & cheese, then go home to start season five.
